Brainiac 5

Brainiac 5

One of the greatest geniuses in the galaxy, Brainaic 5 has attempted to restore his family's honor as a proud member of the 31st century Legion of Super Heroes.

Aliases: Querl Dox, Brainiac 5.1, B-5, Brainy
First Appearance: ACTION COMICS #276, 1961

Team Affiliation: The Legion of Super-Heroes, the Legion of Substitute Heroes

One of the most brilliant minds of the 31st Century, young Querl Dox was a genius from the planet Colu, who sought to erase the stain of his family's legacy of villainy. His ancestor Brainiac was one of Superman's most notorious foes, so Brainiac 5 sought to redeem the Dox name, and became a member of the Legion of Super-Heroes while still a teenager. His advanced Twelfth-Level Intellect made him an invaluable asset to the team, as he invented the Legion's fight rings, as well as the anti-lead serum which allowed Mon-El to leave the Phantom Zone and become a Legionnaire. The Legion's Time Bubble was also a Brainiac 5 invention.

Despite his often cold exterior, Brainiac 5 harbored deep feeling for his teammate Supergirl, and when she died in the CRISIS ON INFINITE EARTHS, he became despondent. Despite his incredible mind, there have been times when Brainiac 5 has lost control of ihs mental faculties and become a danger to his teammates and the world. But he has always pulled back from the brink, and remains a valuable asset to the Legion. Other similar versions of Brainiac 5 have appeared in various parallel universes, including the rude and antisocial Brainiac 5.1 in the post ZERO HOUR continuity, along with another version from Earth Prime, who falls in love and marries Dream Girl. The original Brainiac 5 has recently appeared once more, as an older version of himself, and is still the most valuable member of the Legion of Super-Heroes.

In the 20th and 21st Centuries, the villainous Brainiac was one of the universe's most lethal threats, constantly battling Superman. Although an A.I., Brainiac had a humanoid "son" named Vril Dox on the planet Colu. Dox, who was also brilliant, later had a child, and the title "Brainiac" became an honorific on Colu. In the 31st Century, Coluan teenager Querl Dox was granted the name "Brainiac 5," for his advanced Twelfth-Level Intellect. An average human has a Sixth Level Intellect, while an average Coluan has a tenth level, making Brainiac 5 the smartest person on his homeworld.

He soon joined the newly formed Legion of Super-Heroes, where Brainiac 5, or "Brainy" as his friends called him, became a truly invaluable member of the team. He joined the team during the same period as Supergirl, who was visiting from the past, and whom he would harbor feelings for; it would prove to be a love that would last several years.

Brainiac invented the Legion's flight rings, which allows for all members to have the ability to fly. He also created an anti-lead serum that allowed Mon-El to leave the Phantom Zone and join the team. Brainiac also invented the Legion's Time Bubbles, which allowed them to time travel to the past. But for all his contributions to the team, he has also been behind some of their biggest catastrophes. Brainy once created an advanced AI which he called COMPUTO, which turned against the team and killed one of Triplicate Girl's duplicates. He also accidentally transformed Professor Jaxon Rugarth into the supremely powerful Infinite Man. He later became mentally unstable, and used the Controllers' Miracle Machine to create the near unstoppable Omega.

After these incidents, Brainiac left the team and became a member of the Legion of Substitute Heroes, which he led for a brief time. Once he cured his teammate Matter Eater Lad's insanity, which was caused by eating the Miracle Machine as a way of stopping it, he was readmitted into the Legion proper. After the death of his beloved Supergirl during the cosmic event known as the CRISIS ON INFINITE EARTHS, Brainy fell into a deep depression, although he was eventually able to move past it.

During the ZERO HOUR crisis in time, a new version of Brainiac 5 emerged. This version of Brainy's mother had the title of Brainiac 4 and was one of his homeworld of Colu's most well regarded scientific minds. She abandoned her son the very day he was born, as she wanted to continue her research, and she saw a baby as nothing but a distraction. Her son Querl became even more intelligent than she was however, and was soon drafted into the government sponsored Legion of Super-Heroes. When his version of the Legion became trapped in the past, he was instrumental in getting his team back home to their proper time. This Brainy was later revealed to come from Earth-247.

On Earth Prime, a version of Brainiac 5 was even more unfriendly than his previous versions, and often tried to usurp the leadership of the team from Cosmic Boy. Unlike previous realities, this version of Brainiac 5 was in a relationship with Dream Girl, and eventually married her.

The original continuity version of Brainy returned as an adult, and was a central figurel during the Lightning Saga, which brought back Wally West to the 21st Century. Brainiac 5 and Cosmic Boy eventually discovered that the United Planets were preparing to invade the Earth, as it had been overrun with xenophobic zealots. In an effort to delay the invasion, Brainy set himself up as Colu's dictator for a temporary time. During the event known as LEGION OF 3 WORLDS, Brainiac helped restore Bart Allen and Superboy Conner Kent to life in the 31st Century.

Powers and Abilities

brainiac5-powers-LOSH001_09_10_color-v1.jpg Querl Dox doesn't have any physical powers to speak of, but his Twelfth-Level Intellect is his greatest asset. The smartest man on a planet full of geniuses, he has exceptional  calculation skills, a photographic memory, and unparalleled technical know-how. Querl is considered the kind of prodigy that comes along once a millennium on Colu. Brainy has a force field belt, that allows him to go into battle alongside his teammates, even though his hand to hand combat skills are relatively weak compared to the rest of the Legion. He also can fly due to the use of his Legion flight ring, which he invented with his friend Invisible Kid.

Essential Storylines and History

"Supergirl's Three Super-Girlfriends!" (ACTION COMICS #276, 1961)

In this first appearance, Brainiac 5 joined the Legion alongside several other notable members, including Triplicate Girl, Sun Boy, Phantom Girl, Shrinking Violet, Bouncing Boy, and Supergirl. Even from the very start, Brainy was enamored of Kara Zor-El, and asked her to be his girlfriend when they both got initiated into the team. She declined, although she would later develop feelings for him too.

"Computo the Conqueror!" (ADVENTURE COMICS #340, 1966)

brainiac5-essential1-computothecongeror-ADV-cv340-v1.jpg Although his intentions are noble when building the world's most advanced robotic brain in COMPUTO, Brainiac 5's powerful AI had a mind of its own, and became one of the Legion's most lethal enemies. It even killed one of Triplicate Girl's duplicates, something that Brainy would carry much guilt over through the years.

"This is the Day the Universe Dies!" (SUPERBOY AND THE LEGION OF SUPER-HEROES #250, 1979)

brainiac5-essential2-thisisthedaytheuniversedies-SBLSHO_250_C1-v1.jpg Brainiac5  slips into madness and almost destroys the team when he creates the creature named Omega, the "living embodiment of all hate that has ever existed." The creation of Omega was a stain on Brainy's record in the Legion for a long time and another example of Brainy’s failing mental faculties wreaking havoc on the team.

brainiac5-essential3-bookfour-FCLW-Cv4-v1.jpg Due largely in part to the genius of the now adult Brainiac 5, the Legion of Super-Heroes are able to revive not only Bart Allen, the speedster known as Impulse, but also the Conner Kent version of Superboy. Brainiac 5 is able to accomplish this by working together with versions of himself from Earth-247 and Earth Prime, who put their heads together to save the day.
