Nearly two centuries ago, Abin Sur was a philosopher and history teacher on the planet Ungara. When Starkoar of the Green Lantern Corps fell in battle, Abin inherited his power ring, a weapon that harnessed the green energy of willpower from the universe’s emotional spectrum. Abin left his life and his son Amon behind to become protector of the planets of Space Sector 2814 (including Earth). He became close friends with Thaal Sinestro, Green Lantern of Sector 1417, who later married Abin’s sister Arin. He also often questioned the wisdom of the Guardians of the Universe, the immortals who created the Green Lantern Corps.

On the planet Ysmault, Abin was told prophecies regarding a crisis called the Blackest Night, and that he would die when his power ring failed him. To combat the Blackest Night, he founded the Indigo Tribe, warriors who harnessed the indigo energy of compassion. To increase his safety and conserve ring power, Abin now traveled via starship. While transporting the villain Atrocitus, his own fear caused his ring to fail and the prisoner escaped, injuring Abin and damaging the ship. Rather than force a landing in a city on nearby Earth and risk civilian casualties, Abin crash-landed in the California desert. The dying Abin Sur’s last act was to bequeath his ring to his successor, the Earthman Hal Jordan.
